Chapter 5

“PROCEED TO Bedford and Louther,” Dispatch told him, and JD acknowledged the call, turned on his lights and siren, and hit the gas. Things seemed to be getting worse, not better. He’d answered three calls during his shift, and two of them were drug related. They had to find the source and shut it down.

JD pulled to a stop behind Red’s cruiser and got out. A suspect lay on the ground.

“He isn’t cooperating,” Red said.

It seemed the young man had decided to go limp and not cooperate about getting into the cruiser.

“Maybe you should kick him in the gut? No one’s around to see or care.” JD winked and the suspect suddenly sat up.

“That’s police brutality.”

“No,” JD corrected. “That’s us getting you to do what we want.” He chuckled and helped Red get the suspect into the backseat, then closed the door. “When I was at the station an hour ago, the mayor was in the chief’s office again.”

“I know. Did you see the paper? They as good as called our town a drug hub,” Red said vehemently. “Where is all this shit coming from? We don’t have that many users in town. So who’s distributing it all? We apprehend people, but except for that guy who broke into Fisher’s building, no one is talking.”

“You’d think one of them would roll over.”

Red shook his head. “Not a single one. They know if they keep quiet, it makes it harder for us to build a case, and this is way too much money for any of them to give up on. Someone is running a clearinghouse right under our noses, and we can’t see them.”

“What about the information he provided about them using trucks?” JD said.

“Too broad. Do you know how many trucks run on the turnpike every day?”

“So how did you get the last one?” JD asked.

“Almost pure luck. Terry and I stumbled on it almost by accident. No, these people are smart, and they’re innovative. However they’re doing it, it’s right under our noses. I know it. The thing is, one of us may have even seen it and not known what was going on at the time.” Red huffed. “I need to get him to the station for booking.”

“My shift is almost over, and I need to face my mother. She messaged me that she’s on her way from the airport.” He looked longingly at the backseat of Red’s car. “I’d rather spend the rest of the night patrolling the back alleys of town to root out every one of this guy’s friends than face my mother for five minutes.”

“That bad?” Red asked.

“If there’s a firefight, be sure to call me. It would be less stressful.” JD waited until Red was in the car and then followed him back to the station. Once he’d punched out, JD messaged Fisher, who called him right back.

“Do you want me to meet you at your house?” Fisher asked as soon as JD answered the call.

“You don’t have to do this,” he said for the millionth time.
